There are a few ideas about the troopers:
(I thought we can continue the discussion here, rather than in the "WorldShift in Motion!" topic, couse that's a little different)

Anyway, about the troopers - they shouldn't just stand still while under fire.
That just doesn't look good.
They should take cover behind the nearest rock/tree/building/(remains from a helikopter  ), or any other suitable or almost suitable (hey, everything is better than standing still in the open while someone is shooting you :D ).
That is, if that object is close enough (I don't want my troops to start runnig aroung the battlefield, serching for cover ).
If there isn't any cover arround, they should just drop on the ground, or at least crouch.
Why not even roll sideways to evade heavy fire?
And I don't mean forcing the selected unit to take cover. I mean all ranged unis (well they can't hide behind a rock/tree if their weapon is a sword, of cource! ) should automaticly take cover when an enemy unit (and also structure, if there are defence turrets - at least for the humans...) opens fire at them. (not only troopers)

I'm sure every single one of you have seen the "movie" at least a thousand times, but here are a few shots I made :

There are more, but that's enough.
I think they show how the troopers stand still. (that way you can take a better look, becouse the movie is too fast)

Btw, "drop on the ground" gives me an idea.
How about, when with troops in a jungle/forest/what ever, being able to set an ambush?
Order the troopers to collect some leaves/grass/moss and others (whatever they have lieing arround), then drop on the ground, and cover themselves.
Then they just wait for the enemy to get close enough (or wait for you to give the order) to fire at them.
That could be done in the middle of the road (a great ambush for convoys, or patrols). Like here :

I think that would be a good place to make an ambush for those guys.

Or [I]if there's a unit like a sniper (PLS, BSS, tell me there are going to be snipers!), it could be placed on the edge of a cliff above the road, and the none-suspecting enemies could walk in the trap, ect...

Btw, if there's such an unit (a sniper), it could be stealth, or semi-stealth by default. :D

Anyways, after so much typing I got confused, so don't pay attention if I have repeated myself.

Uhm .. that's a long story! But let me try briefly:

There are many games (some upcoming good games too) where units like our Troopers do not run to take cover. It is mostly matter of where the focus of the game is. For now, we do not want to shift the focus we have so far into some other direction. For example, it can be dull to recreate WW2, in some cases, without taking the normal human behavior as primary base for game design. But in case of WorldShift, this is not necessarily true.

Our Troopers actually do shoot from different angles and are using different animations (which will be shown in an updated version of Trooper showcase movie in near future), but we are very careful with how much exactly units should be free to "think".

About sniper units - No we do not have the typical "WW2" type of sniper tactics. But, yes, there is something that you will like a lot. There is a Human Officer called Assassin which has similar purpose. In WorldShift we have certain game mechanics (among others) based on something we call "proximity stats". This means simple positioning of units can make huge difference on the course of the encounters. You better place your Assassins far from each other and on solid range from heavy fire in order to truly feel their devastating power. :)

Yeap, it's about time for an update!
The last one was 20 days ago!

P.S.: I don't know, normal human behavior sound very good to me...?
Or at least realistic behavior...
Well, anyway, I think those ideas weren't that bad...

P.P.S.: ...which will be shown in an updated version of Trooper showcase movie in near future...

And that is... ?
a month or two?

I know it's not easy, but please try to update the site more frequently.

Well, if you want a game like that, try CoH. It has amazing cover systems. But, for WS, i'd frankly be annoyed by my troopers running away from my mouse cursor. :bash:
