I see that Canada vs Czech Republic hockey game is for this afternoon. Should be a interesting 10 days of intense competition by the world's best young atheletes as they try to get the Crown. Anybody out there follow this? or is lucky enough to attend the games?
the Championship takes place in Liberec and Pardubice, both around 100km away from Prague. I like watching hockey, but I hardly ever go to see the matches myself. In fact since I stopped playing hockey (5 years ago) I only attended matches of our national team on WC 2004 in Prague.
Sadly I even missed this match with Canada, well, better for my nerves :)
hockey in pl sux, i just like to play nhl on pc ;)
but i like watching this game too, and, sorry Elvain, i always was fan of Canada :)

hi Elvain - I see that Czech Rep beat Slovakia today. Is there much of a sport rivalry between these countries? (I suspect that there is rivalry but probably not like the intensity of Czech vs Russia or Canada vs Russia back in the 1970/80s era - those contests were much more than just hockey games)

yes, there is and much of it.
Though it doesn't have that political breath the CS-Soviet rivalry used to have in post-1968 era for us.
Now the Czechs feel it more like: "hey, look, again we've beaten our smaller brothers" and they feel it the same as if we beat Germans in football ("hey, we've beaten our big neigbours that always were better")
Funny thing for me - half Czech, half Slovak - is that whoever wins I feel "their" feeling and with it to them, though I am closer to the Czech feelings (also because the Slovaks have some kind of complex against the Czechs and hardly beat them)
PS: Canada seems to go for the title again... as usualy :)

Maybe not - Sweden just wacked in 4 goals in 3rd period (last one with 7 sec to play - rather exciting) to defeat Canada 4-3. The pool A is appears now open for anyone to advance to semis.

NHL outside game - Buffalo
Anyone see the first professional 'outside' hockey game in the US on New Year’s Day? - 75,000 persons attended in a snowstorm, plus many many millions on TV. Good play by Vanek (Austria) and Hecht (Germany) for Buffalo, and Crosby (Canada) and Malkin and Gonchar (Russia) for Pittsburgh, plus all the other players, made the whole effort to play outside are real spectacle

but the embarassment when Slovakia wins? As oposed to the ethusiasm on Slovakian side :D
I feel more than Czech so I like it more when the Czechs win, but to be honest, from emotional point of view, Czech victories are boring ;)

It's actually my opinion that the only use of national flags is to increase the amusement of watching sports.
In daily life I couldn't care less about what colors the little flag in other people's passport has, but I swear to you, there's no greater joy than seeing the dutch drop out of an international soccer-series. :)
