Well I just got done playing the game for the first time. I played for about an hour and a half. All on the first mission.
First, the bad.
- As has been stated before, units can walk through trees and other solid objects.
- The trees often block the view of enemy units, which can be quite annoying. If there is a way to rotate the camera, I couldn't find it. It would be nice to have a key-assignment option but I couldn't find that either.
- As far as difficulty goes, I think it's a little too insane right now. I know Frujin said they know the difficulty is cranked up right now but honestly I'm surprised that anyone has made it past Bolt from the Blue. I'd love to see a video of how they did it. The problem seems to be that the enemies that eventually spawn at the first checkpoint and kill your second Hero will not appear until your first Hero makes it to the second checkpoint and controls it. I have yet to be able to beat it. I've tried leaving my entire force except 2-3 troopers at the first checkpoint. I send the troopers up to the second checkpoint to trigger the event. However, this doesn't work, it doesn't trigger. So I instead send my Hero and 3 troopers up to the checkpoint. This works but the enemy force that spawns makes quick work of my units before I get back. I make it back in just enough time to respawned all killed soldiers but then I get a second rush from the north and I'm totally wiped out. I literally played this mission 5 times sharpening my strategy each time and never made it, I'm no noob to RTS's either. It seems that, if you would want your entire game tested, it would be wise to make it a little easier to get past the first level :D It's bedtime now but I will try again tomorrow. I think the last time I attempted it I might have dragged an enemy force from the north down with my Hero, and that could've been what killed me. Either way its still way too hard :)
Now the good.
- The lighting effects are great. The lightning is really cool, and the light reflections (from gunfire ect) on the surrounding terrain is nice.
- The audio is nice and syncs well to the gameplay.
- The gameplay is easy to quickly pick up. Standard RTS controls means fans of the genre will be able to make the switch quickly and easily.
- The pathfinding and AI work well, I was never cussing at the screen because units were getting stuck, splitting up, or standing around when everyone else was attacking. This is a common problem in RTSs and I've yet to see it here.
- Movement speed is perfect. It's not too fast to keep track of and it's not too slow to be boring.
The biggest plus is that I have yet to experience any true bugs or crashes on my system. I'm running an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700, 4GB OCZ Gold DDR2 PC6400 RAM and a BFG nVidia 8800 GTX (soon to be SLI) on an ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard. I run on XP Pro (Vista FTL) using 2 monitors, one 24"WS Dell UltraSharp at 1920x1200 res and one 19 Dell UltraSharp at 1280x1024 res. Temps on load are 48C (CPU) and 55C (GPU), 35C (MB). The dual monitor thing also remind me of one more issue. The right side of the screen which leads to my second monitor is not locked in. When I run most games they lock the mouse into the window so that if I move it to the right edge it will not go past it. However, in WS I am able to move my mouse beyond the right side and onto my second monitor which obviously makes moving the camera with my mouse a pain, I have to use the keys. I believe I can fix this is my nV Control Panel but it would be nice for it to be default.
I am liking the game so far, I just would like to get past the first level to experience more of it :)
