that's sad, you have been very helpful so far...

Some of the names which were ok (even in the last version) are now with ".m"s and ".f"s, some of those not working were fixed.

"Aaqib.m" "Aaqib"
"Aaqil.m" "Aaqil"

examble: Upper is ok

Down no ok
"Aaqib.m " "Aaqib "
"Aaqil.m " "Aaqil "

Here are empty places after .m or .f

looks like good game :)

btw, what map you use? maybe the crashes are now caused by the 13MB terrain.dt

Laudan
8 Jan 2009, 06:39
I use the old map. There are change only the southpeak of sinai and some missing villages. The terrain.dt size is 13.341 kb. The questfile havent more any vanilla names or
wrong names. I change also the Kingdoms_800 and 1000 and 1200 file.
The douple name from polen and hungary i take out. In text/diplomacy/ i change the vanilla names in dump into the mideast names.

The king stand near the shore and looks into the water. Hhmm, i dont like it that some roads are in the sea. I must ask my cleric what he can do to disappear all roads from the sea. Some days later comes the cleric to the king and bring an old pergament. He says. We can do now. Read this miracle spell and all roads disappear.

Where now did you keep roads or create new ones? I'm not sure if they were even used that much in vanilla KoH?

Guys, question, query and check?

I can get the latest downloads to work, takes a little longer to load, but now I have sound as well as "fancy" cursors under wine (because of the skip intro patch, I have the same problem with Bink in diablo2, kick in after 8 hours, not so with KoH), but the game will only run for approx. 7 minutes..

Here's my install order:
de-pak-ed : defs + europe + texts
unzipped : MidEast1 .. MidEast4 (in order)
unzipped : HL_081_maps
unzipped : HL_081_maps2
unzipped : HL_081_images
unzipped : wroads

I checked the files wen into the correct folder, but I'm woundering if the crash mentioned above is happening, caused by an AI player?

Any thoughts, at least to get it to an "uncrashable" level. I have access to all folders and can mix and match as necessary (including HR, HARD, and GoG 1.6) Any thoughts would help..

Paul
BTW does anyone else have vanilla KoH crash around 8-10 hour mark (of continuous use)

paulwratt
12 Jan 2009, 08:59
thanks for that. (I downloaded the MidEast zips about 5-7 days ago, got the 081's last night)

crashing game info: (nubian christians) easy (something gets triggered, I will try and test more later)

I just had a bash a fatamids on hard, and when that seemed OK, (nubian christains) again, this time on hard. They both seem to work fine, even though I loose my sound after a short time, but that is a Wine thing, not the game...

As far as I could tell, it crashed because something is missing when running under "easy" (I'm a noob/nuub player, 2 games under my belt, one with saves, and half a dozen "13 hour sessions" with the demo, so I need as much help as I can get :) )

I will check medium/normal and other starting points on easy, when I get back later.

Points of interest:
A) I noticed a wierd "height" thing in the sea right of Egypt
B) the row of unit icons (when out of a city) is sitting up a couple of pixels
C) I noticed ".f" & ".m" after names..

BTW: from what I can gather regarding the "fat" terrain.dt, it is basically because of a LOT of raised height in the terrain of the map. from what I have seen in the vanilla, most of that is actually flat, or on the "ground zero" level, hence the smaller terrain .dt (this is unconfirmed as of yet)

Questions:
1) whats with the lack of "clarity/definition" on the zoomed levels of the mini-map, is that because of the way it is created?
2) what is the reason for "drawing" the map with only horizontal + vertical edges, is this because of the "quirkiness" of the editor, or a time thing? (there are no continuous angular sections, especially round the coast)
3) there are a few "countries" with only On in their descriptions, is this lack of time, or lack of appropriate content?
4) lastly, is their a way to view ".dt" files

That should be enough for the moment

Paul
PS If there are time related content/editing things that need to be done, I do have the skills.. I will look at adding some more descriptions asap.. nice when running KoH in a window...

I forgot to mention there is one more crash on al-Wahat/Darfur/Nubian border
crashing game info: (nubian christians) easy (something gets triggered, I will try and test more later)the info above may explain it? yet I usualy test only normal difficulty, as I haven't noticed any important differences in my previous modding.

I just had a bash a fatamids on hard, and when that seemed OK, (nubian christains) again, this time on hard. They both seem to work fine, even though I loose my sound after a short time, but that is a Wine thing, not the game...

I will check medium/normal and other starting points on easy, when I get back later.OK, I will check it again. Maybe the difficulty may affect those crashes. I will test "crashig areas" on all 3 difficulties in all periods later today

Points of interest:
A) I noticed a wierd "height" thing in the sea right of Egypt
B) the row of unit icons (when out of a city) is sitting up a couple of pixels
C) I noticed ".f" & ".m" after names..
a) will fix it, no problem
b) that's right. So far I found it more or less sufficent. I prefered to make a playable version first and then fix minor problems such as this , one by one
c) already fixed but yet I haven't uploaded it (I better made special excel for easy transport of king/queen/prince/princess names - there are still some missing.

BTW: from what I can gather regarding the "fat" terrain.dt, it is basically because of a LOT of raised height in the terrain of the map. from what I have seen in the vanilla, most of that is actually flat, or on the "ground zero" level, hence the smaller terrain .dt (this is unconfirmed as of yet) I know it's extremely large and I making it little fitter. However, there are large desert areas which need something to be in there. The only possibility is to put sand dunes there

1) yes
2) I'm not sure what you mean. Could you post an explaining screenshot please?
3) lack of time. I thought I would have some time at work last week to complete them, but I was too busy. Though if you don't mind, I'd do this job myself (I have most of them, but they need to be reformulated (shortened)
4) none I would know of.

If there are time related content/editing things that need to be done, I do have the skills.. I will look at adding some more descriptions asap.. nice when running KoH in a window...if I can ask you (al helpers) what I really need is help in technical issues (You most probably noticed that most of serious problems were solved either by Laudan or Doux (or cool-toxic whoom I help with Arabia Universalis mod for EU2).
I think I can take care of all the "historic stuff" such as kingdoms, their names, kings and descriptions. I think this part of mod is better to be done by one person only, in order to have it somehow unified, if you don't mind.

the same with units. Here I should apologise to Laudan that I didn't use some of his units changes in TrainUnits files, which are conneected to MOD HARD - I want to take care of the units spread first. Sorry for that

:)
Thanks for the reply, I understand about the text part, continuity and all

(I found some text for Pervain, Qara khatai, and Qarmats, but its still 2 times as big, even after I condense it.. not fun really, condensing an empire, dynasty or other to one paragraph, but it was definitely an interesting read, especially Qarmats.. I'll leave it to you though..)

As for the "drawing" thing, I played only a "nubian christians" and fatimids, so I have not been around the rest of of the map, (just the persian gulf I think, the sea at the bottom) , it was a stepped thing on the coast, but then again, I'm not one hundred percent on the geography of the area, maybe I'll go check on the net..

..(back soon)..

As for the crashes, I can probably "find" them, but I'm not 100% sure what I can do about tracing them ATM, mostly because I use wine. I have that file/crash tool mentioned elsewhere, but I'm not sure it will give me what I want, because, well, WINE Is Note an Emulator :) and Windows Is Not Enough :))

Anyways, I go look up the map thing, check in-game (I think its just the way its designed, definitely not a bug or other such thing, just my eye picks up stuff like that, patterns and what not..) maybe give the editor a crack..

Thanks for taking the time to reply, hope things are otherwise going well

So is the mod finished or not?
I saw that Laudan finalized his version of ME mod.
Also could you write down requirements or step by step guide on how to install it cause it's kind a confusing and text for for HR and HL is SAME

The biggest problem for me now is that I don't want to spend all - and not even most of my evenings by the computer. Bad news for the mod, I assume.Well, that is very understandable. You're doing it in your spare time - as we all do with games. The modding has to stay enjoyable and that will only be so when the (sometimes tedious) job is done in parts. I can wait (although also for a different reason than patience..).

This Middle East Scenario need his time. Elvain stand not alone. All my progress send i to Elvain. Every day i testing some diffrents setting to avoid the crashes.

I have a little bit more time, because i must only working and not study more. Knights of honor is my hobby.

Here one of a new idea, but its only a idea.

Ehem, sorry.
I thought we work on this mod together so I think we should both know when we can proclaim it is done or not. And all of sudden I see that you proclaim the mod to be done without asking me.

I respect your work much more than you could ever think, you solved almost half of the technical problems, many other being solved by Doux and others, and almost none by me. I only draw the map and made the research... nothing else. I am dependent on your technical solutions, but saying it is done is just unbelievable for me.

Elvain, your work is really perfect and i will not missing any seconds to spent with this nice map. Your mod is detail more as mine and if your Middle East Senario are finished for your mod so are many gamers happy about this. But for me i must finished this work because my healthy is not so good and i will have again sleep without any solutions about knights of honor in my head. I want only play and not programming more.

Elvain, I interpreted the statement by Laudan as `my work is done', in the sense of `my mod of Elvain's mod is finished'. It might have come over as a very definite statement about your part as well, but remember that we're not communicating in our mother tongue with eachother. However that was, Laudan has clarified his statement in this thread.

If I understood it correctly, there are still small things that need to be done; small things, but totaling to a great amount of time, to be done by you. Is that right? Or is there something to be tested or solved as well? By the way, if you like it or not, the rle creator is in full progress, which might lead to more work when (if) it comes out in the future :)

Haha, very good! I noticed this as well. Where now did you keep roads or create new ones? I'm not sure if they were even used that much in vanilla KoH?

The king says to the monk: Running quickley to my old friend Elvain and bring him this message. We can build roads again. Hmm, i think he is a wise man and knows this already.
Monk, here you have some bottle of beer, so, if he knows already all, we can give him some beer.
But say to him , build roads with careful.

What menu you have to open to create roads ? If I want to create rivers I have to click on the rivers button and then use F8. There must be a menu for roads too because when I just load the editor and press F11 nothing happens.

Sorry i forget to say: First press Strg and than F11 and than click the left mouse button and make the road. Right mouse button disable the function.

Hey, Laudan! You are the king of KoH modding and everyone knows that :go:

This is another great news

On the other hand, this finding will only prolongue the final finnishment of the map :) I don't think I will have enough time to do the roads myself.
But hopefully I will be more free and have more time to get the map to some more satisfactory level... and then I will upload it so anyone can make roads

Doux: I Laudan meant Ctrl+F11 (Strg is German version of Control key, I guess)

PS: no, of course I didn't know this.

BTW: We should list all those advancements which were made while making this mod. When trying to answer Bellum's questions I realized I have almost forgotten half of the things I made those 2 years ago

17 Mar 2009, 17:11
That's sad, but I can understand. The problem I faced when I started to mod is that I set my goals too high. Combine that with perfectionism and the work becomes a time-eater. The mod can always be bigger, better, prettier.. new programs come out which provide new possibilities. The best, in retrospect, would be to demarcate early and clearly what has priority and what not. Or at least make chunks of mod that take an acceptable amount of time. Like Laudan said, at a certain moment you want to have something finished and move on. Now, I think, you have drowned in the amount of work still to be done, whereas a clear priority-cut some time ago could have delivered a mod with less features or perfection, but in some way finished.

That doesn't all really matter now. You've done a great amount of work and if anything have shown us, or induced us to look into, what is possible with Knights of Honor. Many thanks for that! Of course anyone can use your mod as a basis or perhaps improve it in the same direction. We'll see. I'll surely venture a play on the Holy Lands in the future.

On a last note, do you have any idea if you will continue other modding, like Holy Rome 1.8 beta, or was your post considering modding in general?

Well, HR means "Holy Rome" which is another mod by Elvain. You can find more about that particular mod here (http://www.rome.webz.cz/KoH_Holy_Rome_mod.htm). About the Middle East Scenario, it's over here (http://www.rome.webz.cz/KoH_Holy_Land_mod.htm). I wonder where that link in your sig went, Elvain..

Laudan has finnished the mod. I don't know if it makes any sense to finnish my version of it... the political map was improved, but generally not many other (important) changes were made.
And to be honest, I already forgot what was about to be done :(

I agree with you Elvain, KoH is far too old and it's short-comings are much too apparent.
So far I've mostly drawn my motivation from hearing about what we can expect from the future, but now CBS appears to be under contract not to distribute any information about what they are doing.
Switching to EU isn't an option though. It has even worse short-comings than KoH, despite also having a few good points.
Perhaps we should use this forum to share reviews of games we might like since the old guard from the Sunflowers forum seems to share a certain taste in entertainment. Despite disliking a few points about EU I could e.g. very well imagine setting up a "small" game with a couple of KoH fans.

I hope you don't mind me misusing your thread for a bit here. I'm trying to come up with ways to stop this forum from going to waste, which would be a shame in my opinion. If the discussion catches on I'd of course suggest switching to a new thread.

Doux
9 Jul 2009, 00:08
@Elvain, of course, it's understandable. At least I understand. I don't play KoH anymore and only in a short wave of enthusiasm I will for some moments.

@Angry, it is a good idea. Although my interest in gaming is waning -whether this is permanent or a seasonal fluctuation, I don't know- I'd be interested, but might not be able to contribute much. Since the tavern has been empty for some time, I guess we could misuse that thread for a while. I don't expect the discussion to become so large that it would really need its own thread. On the other hand, whether we misuse this thread or another might be somewhat irrelevant, if it is given that the thread 'owner' approves..

There is no official support for this game, neither of the companies, that created it, doesn't exist anymore (formally), KoH2 is only a secret dream of few dreamers among us, most probably abandoned somewhere in Crytek plans.

Heh.
But... KoH is the best medieval grand-strategy game out there.
And it's made by Bulgars, so it have much more content in the Eastern world :P
