I want to know too!

Same here. It's difficult to know which unit layout to pick when you don't know the unit's advantages.

Obviously more armor is good, but how much is how good?

If anyone here has ever played the game Shattered Galaxy, it had two armor values. While there was no info ingame on what they did, knowing their specifics literally let you design units that would take 0 damage from certain sources.
This is a great example of how it is infact important to know these things, and it's information that should be available to everyone and not just those who take the time to dig up fan-site databases and such.

Armor mitigates some percantage of the damage as mitigation percent = 0.02*armor/(0.02 * armor + 1)

Hmm. So it's pretty close to simply "armor = % mitigated", just with diminished returns for higher values and vice versa.

Yep. For values below 50 the curve is pretty much identical to "armor = % of damage mitigated", with the tendency of more damage being mitigated than the armor-rating indicates.
To see yourself enter "0.02*x/(0.02*x+1)" here (http://chemmac1.usc.edu/java/math/fplot.html).

(This also shows that human Lord Commander + upgrades + guardian's Fortify aura is a *lot* of damage mitigation.)

Is the multiplier(0.02) the same for all units/races in game?

Yes
