View Full Version : Anime/Manga
Any of you like them? Just a brief survey, as this forum's member are majority European, and I wanted to know their affection toward Anime and Manga ...
I'm not an Anime/Manga fan myself, but I recently watched one anime called "Heroic Age" and it was pretty cool (the main ship reminds me of the Galactica (from BSG) and the music is pretty great). Other than that, I watched "Death Note" (though I first watched the movies; really great story and definitely not for children) and before that - "Samurai 7", which is a good inspiration to watch Akira Kurosawa's original movie. I was quite surprised especially about the last two how non-childish or even adult they are, eventhough they're animations.
But I've never read mangas though...
Samurai 7 has a deep story. Very deep, and packed with blood.
Death Note? I like it! I've collection of it's manga (I haven't seen it's anime)
Raito sure is too intellegent. Tricking everyone. Even kill L! Hopefully Near and Mello can catch him.
Oh yeah, never heard Heroic Age before...
Oh, and I watch animes in Animax (Asia).
So I only watch a few of them...
Edit: It seemed most American who loves Anime/Manga like Death Note. Prove they are violence-lovers? (Survey from another site)
Americans - violence-lovers? Huh, isn't that a well-known fact? :p ;) Though I liked Death Note not so much because of the "violence" (actually, the violence there is rather small), but because of the philosophical theme (and, yes, I am a Kira supporter) and the immensely great "cat and mouse" play - it's like watching the two greatest grossmeisters ever trying to outwit each other on a huge and complex chessboard!
Samurai 7 - I didn't see much blood there either, considering most of the nobuseri (I hope I got the "name" of the bandits right) were quite mechanical. Though I've watched it on TV two years ago or maybe more, so I might have forgotten some parts...
Heroic Age is a pretty new anime, from 2007. It's not exactly as deep and serious as the above two, but it's still quite good. Basically, it's a sci-fi anime (and, as I said, the main ship, the Argonaut, reminds me a lot of the Battlestar Galactica), with the broad topic of searching for a meaning in this universe and to some extent - outgroing it (plus, of course, some romance too, especially in the end). Here is a clip with the title song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DmRQ9n3ST8) (though I think the translation there is the old one, which is horrible). And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5OgLEtJt-E)... this is the first track of the soundtrack, which is just... great!
Btw, I know that's it's far from anime, but a normal series (with actors etc.), but has anyone here, besides me and Frank, seen the Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi (aka The Story of the First King's Four Gods, aka The Legend)? It's a Korean historical series with elements of mythology from last year too, with great effects (after all, the budget was $43mln. for only 24 series), the music is great too (by Joe Hisaishi), and the actors and story as well!
If you think Death Note is violent, you haven't seen Elfen Lied. or Whan Cicadas Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. or Dokuro-chan. Death Note is tame, it's family fun. :)
As for anime in general, myanimelist.net says I've seen about 200 titles. Which is a lot for me. Feels weird.
If you think Death Note is violent, you haven't seen Elfen Lied. Elfen Lied is amazing! It's the only anime/manga I've seen actually so far, but I liked it.:go:

It amazed me too, in a cultureshock manner, back when I've seen it. :)
Hah, I just downloaded Elfen Lied a few days ago, haven't started watching it though. And Death Note is more about the outwitting, not so much about the deaths. ;)
Btw, if anybody knows some other more serious animes (I mean, not too childish and preferably with not too much romance), I'd be really glad for some suggestions! :)
not a big fan of anime, but I used to watch Fullmetal Alchemist (great storyline).
Then I got wrapped up with Avatar: the last air bender (yes, it is a kids show), as I like the flow of the story from each of the main characters point of view (my favorite is Zuko, fallowed by Uncle Iroh) . It has a bit of everything; drama, suspense, action, comedy,etc...
I only wish it was more directed to adults than children.

There's quite a lot of those, you'd better specify what you've seen and what you prefer. Have you seen FLCL, NGE, Cowboy Bebop, Haibane Renmei, Miyazaki's films? They are must-see, they fit the criteria of yours and still they're rather different from each other.
Hmm, yeah, Death Note only have a few violence, but why in my country it embedded 'Young Adult'?
Wah? A Kira supporter? I don't approve his means, but I approve his end (esspecially as many of those who he killed are 'infidels', yeah, real infidels)
What is Elfen Lied?
just to help you with your survey, I'm not a fan of these :)
I never came to contact with them at all

Oh, yeah, I watched Avatar too (and I wish it was more adult-oriented as well), not mainly for young teenagers. It's a nice show and Zuko is indeed the most interesting character there - not only that he's quite more grown-up, but his story is the deepest there. Oh, and I like the most how the four different bendings are based after real-world Eastern martial arts. But I haven't seen an episode since months though...

From those I've heard only Cowboy Bebop and since it sounded quite childish, I didn't bother. And, as I said, all animes I've ever seen are Samurai 7, Death Note, Avatar (if it's counted as anime, I thought it's more of a normal animation) and Heroic Age, plus Elfen Lied currently on the waiting list. But although I'm currently on a sci-fi theme, I'd like nearly anything, as long as it's serious. So what are those that you mentioned about? :)

Well, I personally approve his means quite well, if I was on his place, I'd probably do the same (though definitely not so smart). But, hey, I'm a skeptic for everything that is human, especially about the legal system, so I guess that's expected... :p

Just as expected :go:

I like the fire art. Well, they were the only ones with steams, and I like fires and technologies.
But, no Gunpowder?

Cowboy Bebop are sci-fi future anime/manga... Well, it has Singapore (!) as a crucial part in it's story
Avatar is American Cartoon, not Anime (Well, even thought it is not American Cartoon, it also not a Anime. Maybe Chinise Animation?)
What the hell is Elfen Lied? Because all people seemed to love it (and I don't know it)

If I were him I would rather assasinate the global world leader and lead a resistance against the world. After all it will be quite easy with Death Note, and we want a New World Order too, wasn't us?
From those I've heard only Cowboy Bebop and since it sounded quite childish, I didn't bother.
I'd like to inform you that "bebop" in fact is not a funny character's name, but a perfectly legit term for a distinctive jazz/blues music genre. What's more, the series is good sci-fi. Watch it, first TV series, then CB: Knocking on Heaven's Door OVA ("OVA" stands for a direct-to-video film).
Elfen Lied currently on the waiting list.
Don't hesitate to share your impression right after you regain your sanity ;)
But although I'm currently on a sci-fi theme, I'd like nearly anything, as long as it's serious. So what are those that you mentioned about? :)
Those are classics of our days, widely known and extremely popular.
FLCL also known as Furi-Kuri, quite bizarre mini-series. NGE stands for Neon Genesis Evangelion, aim for the TV series and then NGE: End of Evangelion OVA. Haibane Renmei is a slowly-paced, heartwarming and remarkably beautiful series about some girls' after-death existence.
You probably have heard of some of Hayao Miyazaki directed anime films. Those include Spirited Away and Hawl's Moving Castle. Spirited Away is especially good, also check out famous lighthearted My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - great sci-fi classic. My personal favorite, though, is Porco Rosso, a beautiful 1930's aviator story with a twist.
Miyazaki is a head of Studio Ghibli, and it worth checking virtually every anime they created. Among those especally interesting are Grave of the Fireflies (two children trying to survive in the late WW2 Japan) and Pom Poko (raccoon nation opposes urbanisation - with cultureshock value). Both anime directed by Isao Takahata, another great name to remember.
I'll throw in some more titles later. But the abovementioned are must. Look for them, watch them, they are the best.
What the hell is Elfen Lied? Because all people seemed to love it (and I don't know it)
Ah, Elfen Lied, cute little girls inbetween flying bodyparts and rivers of blood. Well, some people love the series, some people turn pale, then green, then vomit. Check out yourself which type is you ;)
who the hell edit my post?
Just as expected :go: why?
Because you don't appear to be someone, who watches animes? ;) :p
Maks, from those you mentioned, I've heard only of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Spirited Away. But I'll give them a try after Elfen Lied, especially if they're not too big. I guess I'll have to become a member of animes-bg then, they seem to have a rather nice base and info for various animes... :)
Any of you like them? Just a brief survey, as this forum's member are majority European, and I wanted to know their affection toward Anime and Manga ...
I absolutely don't like them. I'd prefer hentai.

I must rely on your word here. Go on, and let the Force be with you.
To fulfill my promise, I guess I'll share a couple of my favorite anime titles of a beginner-friendly type.
Paranoia Agent a.k.a. Mousou Dairinin - a nearly-perfect supernatural thriller that follows an investigation of what seems to be some teenage boy's hit-and-run spree. Needless to say, the truth is far beyond that. Opening music sequence to the series is quite unique.
Azumanga Daioh is often referred as the best anime comedy series ever. Having virtually no plot, it follows everyday life of several high school girls. I know you, NikeBG, insisted on serious suggestions, but this one seriously stands for it's fame. :)
And as you mentioned your interest in sci-fi, I'd like to add, that the series PLANETES a.k.a. ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ is probably the most authentic and accurate Hard SF anime. Set in not so distant future, when space flights within the Solar system occur every day, PLANETES tells of a team working on Earth orbit. Alas, Hard SF animes generally are rare.
I absolutely don't like them. I'd prefer hentai.
Oooo. Shoot, Hentai(pervert) you are! H-lover!
why?
From your acts, your words, I consider you to be a RTS-nerd, and not line Anime/Manga....
BTW, Elfen Lied, they're considered mature (for adult audience) in onemanga.com

hehe, RTS nerd who has only played 4 RTSies in his whole life :D
Do you?
I have played 20 ++ RTS, mods excluded.

Grafic violence, told ya. Haven't read the manga, though.

I'm everything but a video-gamer.
I am here not because of my interest in RTS games (so I would have them all and play them 20 hrs a day), but because I ofund KoH early when it started to be developed and I felt how it is developing and I could influence it somehow to make it closer to what I like.
I am sure every 12 years old boy here have played more games I did in my 24 ;)
but I should stop being off-topic

Read it...
I always says read the manga first before the anime. ;)
To all series, of course..
BTW, I'd read it if it only violence that matter. That is an 'ecchi' tag on Elfen Lied, so I refrain from it... (BTW read wiki on ecchi to know what I mean)

Hmm, yeah. I've firstly played AoM, (or was it Warcraft III?) and then I became RTS-nerd...
I needed only 2 hours each day to play my RTSes (well only on weekdays. On weekend I play like there are no tomorrow)

Now you're being too picky. Ecchi is not hentai. :) Talking the disturbing bits of EL, it is only violence that matter. The rest is hardly noticable in comparison.
The ecchi tag is -in my opinion- not applicable to the motion picture series. I haven't read the comic though.

But sometimes it is near. Ecchi is 'softcore', but soft quality maybe better than the hard ;)
So I refrain from seeing it.
Oh, anyone please read the Elfen Lied Manga and tell me if it's good or not, because I'm afraid to see it. Yeah, afraid.
PS: Because of the 'ecchi' tag. Not the violence.

 If I didn't know you're Indonesian, I'd think you're an American Christian-fundamentalist from some puritan family... :p

Or a Brezhnev-era Communist Youth activist :))
come on, guys, he's religious person, let him be with his faith.. (both examples you gave are too terryfying for me)
on the other hand, little of comics nudity haven't harmed anyone I guess, don't be too afraid, my friend ;)
you know, it's your motivation what matters (and only you and God knows how pure you are) and sex is just normal part of life ;)
PS: What perversion is this?! Violence (something what kills life) is ok but sexuality (something that gives life) isn't? you know very well this isn't what good faith is about! it's as much of perversion as pedofilia or sexual orgies! so don't worry, if violence is ok, 'ecchi' label is no worse, my friend ;)
but I'm a bit off-topic again :D
Yeah yeah guys. OK OK I have read it...
And it's  perverted.
It's really 'ecchi'
Yeah, if I become an otaku, you all responsible for this :( !
I say once again, RESPONSIBLE!!!!
PS: Don't understand what I saying? Then read the manga. ONLINE. QUICKLY
It's not all that easy to become an otaku.
Otherwise everybody would be one, of course.
:p Yeah. It's hard to be come so, right?
Well, I finished Elfen Lied a couple of weeks ago and I'd say I liked it pretty much. And although there's indeed quite a lot of nudity, the huge ammount of blood is still more disturbing than it. I'm thinking about reading the manga some time soon too, but first I'll watch Grave of the fireflies, as another friend recommended it as well. And then probably Cowboy Bebop and Spirited Away, both look quite interesting, especially the former.
Lol, I'm not sure what Otaku exactly is, but I sure am starting to appreciate animes quite more than before! :D
Splendid choice, go on with it.
Apart from knowledge of all things otaku, which will come to you eventually, enjoying things you like is the most important part of it. At least, that's how I feel about the matter. :)
My top 3
1.)BERSERK for me its the ultimate anime.
One badass( I mean realy B-A-D-A-S-S!!!!) mothef***er for a main charecter .Your standart anime main guy looks like a preschool girl compared to him
One briliant bad guy that those not do "bad things" just for doing "bad things" like you normal anime /movie vilian does he has a perpose .And you will really hate him with a pasion when the plot progreses.
IT has pleanty of gore ,phylosophy, romance, frendship, threachery and not to forget HUGE SWORDS ^_^.The universe it takes place is simular to 15 century Europe +fantasy elements .
2.) Samurai Champloo -3 great main characters (2 ronins & a girl they help find someone)Epic humor and one of the best fights in an anime .It`s very stylish with many modern pop-culture references .
3.)Gungrave
Its simular to BERSERK but with guns and mafia guys .
Sorry for my bad spelling :)
It's really 'ecchi'
PS: Don't understand what I saying? Then read the manga. ONLINE. QUICKLYYeah, the Manga series is really ecchi, unlike the motion picture. But I like the manga as well - the story is slightly different. I'm glad I watched the motion picture first though: the manga explains a lot of things not so clear in the films.
Be careful when you say 'ecchi' in Japan. They may mistook you!
Beside, now I'm reading Hayate The Combat Butler. Hilarity ensues.
I read it's scanlation. At Onemanga.
